World Toilet Day 2022

Tomorrow is World Toilet Day. On this day attention is paid to the importance of good sanitation and access to clean and safe toilets for everyone. It is also the day on which we, together with the MLDS and the Toilet Alliance, traditionally announce the most toilet-friendly municipality in the Netherlands. This is already the seventh year in a row that we can proudly present it to you.

The toilet-friendly municipality of the year 2022 is municipality Veere!

Objective: to achieve the standard

Good coverage of hygienic and accessible toilets within all municipalities in the Netherlands that meet the standards set by the Toilet Alliance is the goal that HogeNood and the Toilet Alliance are jointly striving for. Every Dutch person needs a toilet from time to time. Especially those people who, due to the lack of toilet facilities, are stressed out about going out for fear of embarrassing situations or do not dare to go out at all. Something that frequently occurs in patients with digestive issues, ostomy or incontinence, for example. In addition, having access to a hygienic toilet is good for Dutch health. Among other things, this prevents people from holding up their needs and/or drinking less before going out. In other words, sufficient hygienic and accessible toilets are quite a relief for both residents and visitors to municipalities! This allows everyone to enjoy an accessible, inclusive and welcoming municipality. Like last year, we have updated the map that provides insight into the notified toilets in the HogeNood app. These are the toilets known through Oct. 31, 2022, for real-time information, collaborative partners have the map in the HogeNood CMS.

Ranking toilet-friendly municipality Netherlands 2022

With a total of 824 points, municipality Veere managed to steam up from 27th place last year to first place in the rankings. In second place is municipality Utrecht , which moved from third to second place with 765 points. Third place is taken by the municipality of Schiermonnikoog with 736 points.

The 6 indicators for determining the ranking of toilet friendliest municipality 2022

That the municipality of Veere is the most toilet-friendly municipality in the Netherlands does not come out of the blue, of course. In order to determine which municipality may bear this honorable title, an annual ranking is made of all 345 municipalities in the Netherlands. In order to give a fair result, a points system is used. The amount of points a municipality is awarded depends on the following indicators:

1. Density - The number of inhabitants divided by the number of restrooms (max. 300 points)
2. Facilities - The facilities per toilet location. The more people the toilet is suitable for the higher the number of points (max. 300 points)
3. Proximity - The 500 meter standard, where to is no more than 500 meters apart (max. 150 points)
4. Public vs. Open - % Public restrooms of the total number of restrooms within the municipality (max. 100 points)
5. Policy - What policy does the township have for restrooms. Have questions been asked, has a motion been made, has a motion passed, is there an active policy? (max. 100 points)
6. Partner - Is the municipality a collaborative partner of HogeNood (0 or 50 points)

In the media

This is the final ranking. In an earlier publication, we had linked the toilet locations of the former municipalities of Uden and Landerd to the new municipality of Land van Cuijck instead of the municipality of Maashorst. This obviously caused a major shift for these specific municipalities, but the intermediate municipalities also moved places up or down. Thanks for the thoughtfulness Brabants Dagblad!

In addition, a report figure was also communicated in which the points obtained were divided by 100. The number 1 municipality of Veere has 824 points and thus a report figure of 8.2.
